употребляется: левыми журналистами.
описывает: других левых журналистов.
моё впечатление: у левых журналистов, видимо, есть ощущение собственной недо-состоятельности. поэтому они называют друг друга интеллектуалами, дабы сподручнее было на письме щёки надувать.
иногда формальной причиной является наличие у интеллектуала “учёной степени” типа какой-нибудь политологии или международных отношений.
а собственно, много ли ума требуется, чтобы гнать промышленное количество пурги определённой идеологической направленности?
вот так вот и портятся хорошие слова.
I wouldn't generalise it in such a extreme manner… But, there's certainly an attempt of some journalists to correlate themselves with an “intellectual elite”…
Remember the good old Brithish joke:

Думается мне, это скорее такое определение групповое. Типа, “национальный лагерь” и “лагерь мира”. Никакого внутрях смысла, но на обёртку сгодится.
